We are a small family-run wood-working business, established in 1984 in a converted farm steading in the Scottish Highlands. We have a wide range of equipment and facilities with daily delivery and collection services to and from anywhere in the UK or overseas.
The business is run as a partnership of father and son; David & Rob Matthews.
Operating originally as a workshop producing bespoke furniture and specialised items of joinery and turnery, the focus of our work has changed gradually over the years so that, in the 1990’s, furniture was the mainstay of the business. The production of replicas of Charles Rennie Mackintosh furniture designs became a major part of our output; a development that came about through our involvement in the construction of ‘An Artist’s Cottage’ (a hitherto unexecuted design by CRM) for a client near Inverness. Shaker designs were also in demand at that time, and chairs and rocking chairs in particular became a speciality, as did Rob's custom guitars in collaboration with a colleague Rab Gordon. We worked largely in home grown, often Scottish timbers - particularly Oak.
Although still holding to traditional values of quality hand craftsmanship, the 21st century has seen the introduction of computer-controlled machinery into the business. In 2001, we upgraded our woodturning facility, augmenting our venerable hand-turning lathe with a state-of-the-art computerised machine. As a result, we have become suppliers of a wide variety of high quality turnings to a whole range of customers; for this service, we have adopted the brand name Caledonian Woodturners.
