One Thousand Days
with Sirius

The Greenland Sledge Patrol
The experiences of a Sirius man during his two-year tour of duty in northeast Greenland are related in this entertaining book; it is the first-ever English language text on the life and work of the Sirius Patrol. A summary of the the history of exploration and travel in northeast Greenland is also included as an appendix.
To travel long distances by dog sledge in the polar regions is something now experienced by very few westerners. No longer possible in the Antarctic since the ban on dogs there, and with many Inuit dog teams now replaced by motorised ‘skidoos’, the Danish Sirius Patrol is almost alone in using dog teams in this traditional way.

"One Thousand Days with Sirius The Greenland Sledge Patrol by Peter Schmidt Mikkelsen is without question a must-have book... Nothing I have read elsewhere comes close to this insight." Sue Hamilton, The Fan Hitch. See full review here.

"...a splended insight into a little known activity, carried out each year by a dozen or so men, in some of the most hostile and beautiful parts of the polar world." Keith Holmes, BAS Club Newsletter (December 2005)

Of Dogs and Men
Fifty Years in the Antarctic

The Illustrated Story of the Dogs of the British Antartic Survey
1944 - 1994

In February 1994 the last remaining huskies were banished from Antarctica. Mechanical snow vehicles had finally driven them into a reluctant retirement. Saying goodbye was an emotionally charged moment for everyone involved - perhaps most of all for members of the British Antarctic Survey, whose same line of dogs had served for fifty years. As working teams they had become legendary, among the best and most sought after in the world.

Of Dogs and Men marks the end of an era, but the myth and romance of travel by dog team will not be forgotten. Environmental pressures may well come full circle, necessitating a return to the use of dogs. Only time will tell; but it is certain that to share the wilderness with a petrol-driven machine will always be a poor substitute for the warmth and companionship of huskies.

"A unique and inspirational account of a truly remarkable achievement. A book full of heart felt emotion, vividly describing life in Antarctica with dogs. Compelling reading... The photographs are evocative and the text both amusing and original. If only I could have been among those to have shared in this grand adventure."
Rick Swenson, Five-time Iditarod Trail Race Champion.

Iain Brownlie Roy

Beyond the Imaginary Gates
Journeys in the fjord region of
north-east Greenland

An unrivalled collection of images from one of the world’s last true wildernesses.Iain Roy’s photographs capture the stark beauty of the high Arctic. His photographs span 15 years of expeditions to a spectacular but seldom visited region.

These barren lands were once home to an Inuit tribe whose enigmatic traces Iain has documented with pictures of deserted winter houses, tent rings, graves and strange mosaics. He also records the legacy of the small band of trappers who plied the lonely fjords with dog sledges in the early 20th century.

His narrative provides a background to the European exploration of the fjord region and is a personal reflection on our changing relationship with the environment at a time of growing concern about global warming.

TWIN OTTER
Flyvning og rejser i Grønland
( Aviation and Travels in Greenland)

.

This is a book in Danish about travelling in Greenland since the earliest days, and how aviation has developed from the first pioneers until recent time.

It is about Twin Otters from Greenland, Iceland, and Canada and their importance for Greenland through the last 30 years. The author also raises questions and proposals regarding aviation in Greenland's future .

Finally the book includes comprehensive information on Twin Otters, pilots, mechanics and other types of planes that have played their part in this story.

There are no roads in Kalaallit Nunaat - "The Land of the Human Beings" - (Greenland). The geographic and demographic situation makes it unrealistic to connect the cities and regions of Greenland by traditional road systems. Without air transport and without the rugged Twin Otter plane, large areas of Greenland would be cut off from the rest of the world.

Rocks and Ice
Landscapes of the North

Why are some areas characterized by steep, pointed mountains while others are low-lying? How does a glacier work? What are typical traces of ice-age glaciation which are evident almost anywhere in the Arctic and Antarctica? What is a Pingo and how does frost-patterned ground evolve? Where were mines in Svalbard and East Greenland and what was mined?

Questions like these often come to mind while travelling in the Arctic. Vegetation and soils, which is usually cover the bedrock in more temperate regions, are scarce and the rocks clean and fresh. Signs of many geological processes can be seen in the various arctic landscapes we travel today and this book sets out to interpret them in a comprehensible and interesting way.

East Greenland in Winter
On Skis Through Liverpool Land

An entertaining personal account of a small group of enthusiasts planning and carrying out a winter tour in an area of East Greenland remote from human habitation. They travelled mainly on skis but with dogs and skidoos taking a part, from a starting point at the Inuit settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit on the north side of Scoresby Sound. Climbing and taking many excellent photographs, they covered the entire length of Liverpool Land, pulling their supplies on small pulkas.
With pages also on relevant local information, this is a useful guide to exploring this particular part of East Greenland and is a fine example of just what can be achieved by a small but well-organised group of people.
